Thiruvananthapuram: Teachers’ unions have warned of a boycott of the Kerala SSLC 2015 evaluation camps from Monday if the government goes ahead with its plan to increase the number of answer sheets to be evaluated per teacher a day. The General Education Department has also proposed to extend the duty time of evaluators from 8 am to 5 pm.
The officers in charge of the valuation camps have informed the teachers that each of them will be required to evaluate three bunches of answer sheets per day. They have been evaluating two bunches so far.
Unions affiliated to Opposition parties such as Kerala School Teachers’ Association (KSTA), All Kerala School Teachers’ Union (AKSTU) and National Teachers’ Union (NTU) have made it clear that their members would not evaluate more than two bunches a day. Evaluation camps are held in schools without adequate light and without washrooms. The teachers are not even supplied with drinking water, union leaders alleged.
Congress-affiliated union’s president, P. Harigovindan, has also said the KPSTU would not examine more than two bunches or reach camps at 8 am.
Teachers would be forced to resort to harsh measures like a boycott of the camps If the Education Department tries to treat them like bonded labourers without providing the necessary facilities, leaders of the opposition-linked unions said.
Teachers are protesting a variety of issues in evaluation camps. Authorities are turning a blind eye to their demands and protests as they are trying to declare results on April 16 by whatever means, union leaders said.
Chances of mistakes go up when work-load increases. Teachers will be held responsible for any mistake in evaluation. They will have to face the music later. This is why teachers refuse to look at more than two bunches on answer sheets, they said. In addition, reaching camps at 8 in the morning would be difficult for teachers from other districts.
CPI-backed AKSTU’s leaders have demanded immediate action to arrange for drinking water and washrooms in the camps and fans and lights in the rooms where evaluation is done. AKSTU general secretary N. Sreeumar and president R. Sarathchandran Nair met the Director of Public Instructionto discuss their demands.
Though the director has offered to make the arrangements and promised not to start camps at 8 in the morning, district education officers have directed teachers to be present at 8 from Monday, they said.
